Principles of Chinese Painting

20111008 - Principles of Chinese Painting

I borrowed a book on Chinese painting to prepare for my presentation.

The principle of Chinese painting is very much influenced by the Taoism concept of ‘yin’ and ‘yang.’ In short, it is about harmony and balance.

Chinese paintings often depicts nature, mountains and rivers, sky and earth – opposing forces in nature. It is a very metaphysical kind of concept, that elements in the universe are in harmony. The opposites creates the balance and harmony. With light, there is darkness. With fire, there is water. Heaviness and lightness. Man and woman. There are two sides to every matter.

Another interesting principle in Taoism is about the ‘emptiness of things.’ I remember this saying that goes like this: “The bowl is empty and that’s why it is useful.” It suggest the importance of space – the emptiness, the nothingness and its usefulness.

Some of these Taoism concepts could be applied in painting, martial arts and in life, especially during this time of increasingly complexities in the world and difficult global economy. Bruce Lee puts it best. “Learn to be like water, because it takes the shape of any container they are poured into.”

Philips Lighting Design

20110924 - Philips Lighting Design

Was going back home yesterday when I came across this Philips lighting advertisement at Dhoby Gaut MRT station. What interest me here is the concept of lighting. Philips as I know is, creating and redefining lighting solutions. I once saw a Philips color mixer ambient light in school(the one at the bottom right). The special thing is how the user can mix the colors on the color wheel and generate different colors to create different ambience. I have a project currently that involves light play so I think this will be useful for research and inspiration.
