Sichuan Earthquake

As I switched on the TV, came news report of earthquake in Sichuan, Chengdu China. The epicenter of the earthquake is 汶川 a place only 92km from Chengdu city where i used to stay during attachment, and vibrations can also be felt from Jiu Zhai Gou to Shanghai to Taiwan.

The earthquake strikes around 2.30pm measuring up to 7.8 on the Richter Scale and equals to 251 atomic bombs, thinking of it is quite shocking. The traffic in 人民南路、一环路、二环路(roads surrounding chengdu) also became congested when people left buildings for open space. Wondering how is the situation over there…

The situation seems to get worser as death tolls increases…then on TV, Tianfu Square of Chengdu is crowded with people staying there overnight in case earthquake strikes again…

Chengdu Trip Memories

It’s has been 1 year since the chengdu trip last year. Thinking of it brings back memories, 6 of us( jiahui, fongyee, henry, yilong, hwaswee and me) flew on 11 april in the morning after a surprise birthday celebration from my class at the airport. After a 4 hour plus flight, we arrived in chengdu at 3.30pm, the first thing we did was to call back to singapore (haha testing the phone connection), actually is report to parents:)

We were calling back while waiting to clear the custom, one by one we passed the custom to the arrival area where our company staff is waiting. I remembered outside the airport, the difference in air quality is obvious and there’s no blue sky with clouds but the temperature is cooling.

We loaded our luggage into the van and travelled for about 45 minutes to reach our home for the next 4 months-紫荆名苑 at 紫荆西路.(“zi jing” street).

There was no lift and we had to carry our heavy luggage up to 6 storey where we lived. After settling down, we went out to the nearby Carrefour to buy 日常用品. Went back home to tidy up the place as the home was in a mess. Around evening time, i remembered i went back to Carrefour with Hwa Swee to buy big bottles of mineral water back along with sichuan flavour cup noodles and roast chicken and bread for our dinner.

It was a memorable dinner for us to adjust, with the cup noodles tasting “special”. The other food like the bread and roasted chicken taste “singaporean”. :)

I think we ate in the living room in front of the TV that has 40+ channels. There was no internet access and the TV was our best friend haha.

The night was cold and we had to wear jacket even though we are inside the house. That day we slept quite early due to the long flight.

Next morning, we met our company staff at 8am, who showed us the way to travel to our office. And off we went, boarding the public bus (bus fare is RMB 1 = 20 cents in singapore) to our office to begin our attachment for the next 4 months and the rest is history… :)

Drinking Water In Chengdu

Daily water supply – 蓝剑(brand of the water company)

In Chengdu, bottled potable water is delivered to your home if you choose to pay for it. There is usually a water supply shop in your neighbourhood and you could pay them for their service. They collect a fee every month and you get bottled water delivered to your house once every few days. There’s a hotline to call if you run out of water supply.

The other option is to boil tap water every now and then.

So we had this machine installed in our apartment. No more boiling of water.

Apartment In Chengdu- 紫荆名苑

We were put up in this apartment  located along  紫荆西路(zi jing xi lu). It’s actually an old seven-storey condominium named “紫荆名苑”. (zi jing ming yuan)

A photo of our apartment from the outside.

There’s no lift and we had to carry our 20+kg luggages up. And we were living in the 7th storey.
